**Students who received credit for BIOL 1107/1108 through Advanced Placement courses can consider CBIO 2108.

*** Biochemistry Majors: discuss with your biochemistry major advisor the BCMB 4010-4020 sequence.

* See the University of Georgia Bulletin for Core Degree Requirements or talk to your advisor. Also please note Franklin College will have additional requirements over that of the "University-Wide Core." Students who to continue the same foreign language studied in high school might wish to complete degree requirements in foreign language their freshman year. Most students applying to medical school complete at least one course in calculus. Specific science majors (and a few medical schools) may require additional calculus or statistics. Many students feel it wise to have completed one biochemistry course prior to taking the MCAT. Many feel that Genetics 3200 and Human Physiology (VPHY 3100) have content beneficial for the MCAT.

* Some students elect to take these courses in a summer session.

Minimum science prerequisites for most medical schools are eight semester hours each in general chemistry, biology, organic chemistry, and physics (all with lab). Baccalaureate degree requirements in English/literature satisfy most medical school application requirements. Selected medical/dental/optometry/podiatry schools may require additional courses (see web links for specific school requirements). When selecting courses, remember that the MCAT, DAT and OAT are often taken after fall semester of the junior year. See Appendix B.

The MCAT offering in 2015 is expected to contain a new section on behavioral and social sciences (significant content from psychology, sociology, and/or anthroplogy are expected). See:
https://www.aamc.org/download/182662/data/mr5_preliminary_recommendations.pdf

Post-Baccalaureate Premedical students without college credit in the "premedical" sciences often begin with CHEM 1211 and Physics 1111. For course pre-requisites or co-requisites, see the University of Georgia Bulletin.

Appendix B

Courses usually taken by undergraduates in premedicine at the University of Georgia to complete science requirements for admission to medical school (All introductory science courses in the first four areas require laboratory)

One year of General (Inorganic) Chemistry (8 semester hours)

  • CHEM 1211 and 1212 are typically taken.
  • CHEM 1311H and 1312H is the honors sequence.
  • CHEM 1411 and 1412 is the advanced sequence.

One year of General Physics (8 semester hours)

  • PHYS 1111 and PHYS 1112 are trig-based physics courses that are taken by a majority of our premed students.
  • PHYS 1211 and 1212 are the calculus-based equivalents of the courses above required of engineering and physics majors.

One year of Organic Chemistry (8 semester hours)

  • CHEM 2211 and 2212

One year of Biology

  • BIOL 1107 and 1108 (General Biology for Science Students)

Most medical schools recommend BCMB/BIOL/CHEM 3100 (introductory biochemistry/molecular biology) or another introductory biochemistry course (biochemistry, genetics and human physiology are recommended for MCAT).
